With apologies to Yogi Berra, the Dodger catcher who once said, “It's like déjà vu all over again,” Joan Jones announced the theme for her upcoming art show at the Grossman Gallery in Lompoc 's Library, 501 E. North, throughout August as “My Last Hurrah – All Over Again.” Gallery hours coincide with those of the library, which are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturdays.
In February, 2011, when she staged her original “last hurrah,” Jones claims she left the door open for future shows by referring to others --not necessarily in her profession -- who'd come out of retirement, to perform at least once more. These included professional quarterback, Brett Favre, singer Barbra Streisand, and actress, Sarah Bernhardt, who, as a friend noted recently, was well-known for her “farewell tours!”

Before now, Jones has shown only new work at her one-person shows, but “what with the holidays, the effort involved, and that creeping age-thing, I’m slowing down and offering some of my earlier, mostly award-winning, work,” she explained.
The public is invited to an artist’s reception from 2 – 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5, at the gallery . During those hours, Jones plans to show her latest interest, jewelry design, as well as the paintings.

Sharing the spotlight at an art reception/ book-signing will be Joan Jones, artist, and Steve Pepe, vintner and recently-turned author. The event takes place Wednesday, August 11, from 5 – 7 p.m. at The Bookstore, 1137 N. H. Street, at Barton, in the Flower Valley Plaza. Copies of Pepe’s book, “Clos Pepe: A Vintner’s Quest for Great Dirt,” and original paintings and giclee fine art prints will be available for sale at the event.
Steve and his wife Catherine began searching for the ideal ground on which to produce pinot noir grapes in 1994. When they found a 40-acre horse ranch on Hwy. 246, just east of Tularosa Rd. in the Santa Rita Hills, they knew they’d found it. Customers at Lompoc’s only book store now have a chance to browse for more than books since Leslie Sevier, owner of The Book Store in Flower Valley Plaza at “H” and Barton Streets, introduced art into her living room-like setting. Earlier this year, members of the Lompoc Valley Art Assn. began displaying works above the store’s book shelves, and, this month and next, a new show, “Ladies’ Day,” featuring watercolors, pastels, and giclee prints by Joan Jones, hangs near the store’s front window.
An artist’s reception will be held in late July in conjunction with a book-signing event yet to be announced. In the meantime, customers are welcome to come and preview Jones’ work.
